Basmeh and Zeitooneh

Basmeh and Zeitooneh started in 2012 as a group of Syrian expatriates dedicated to serving Syrian refugees in Lebanon. It has grown considerably over the years. The organisation now works in various locations in Lebanon as well as a smaller number of places in Turkey, running community centers in these locations. It has several dozen employees, but also works with volunteers. The name of the organisation means “a smile and an olive tree”.

Mission and Activities

Basmeh and Zeitooneh today is involved in a number of activities benefiting Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon as well as the Lebanese communities where they live. These include cultural activities and trainings, media and journalism trainings, information points for newly arrived refugees, non-formal education for children not enrolled in official schools, psych-social support, relief work in areas not covered by other NGOs, renovation of homes, vocational training, peace education and women empowerment.

Cooperation with forumZFD Lebanon

Basmeh and Zeitooneh has cooperated with forumZFD since 2015 in the project Future Together Now. As part of the project a team of community activities in the community of Bar Elias in the Beqaa was hired by Basmeh and Zeitooneh and subsequently trained and mentored by forumZFD. The community activists work in their communities to improve communication and cooperation between Lebanese host communities and Syrian refugees.
